Shahrin Johry

Shahrin Johry

Dancer/Choreographer

I first photographed Shahrin Johry in a school production, when he was in the dance programme at LASALLE. He was a great mover then and now. He came into the studio with his translucent fabric and weaved some Drama Mama magic. When he saw the photos, he agreed that this was him. Although his interest in dance started with street dancing, he has learned Malay, Indian, and contemporary dance forms, choreographing works as a founding member of Maya Dance Theatre that will redefine multicultural dance in Singapore.

I only heard of Ngiap Heng and saw his artworks, but never really met him in person until my first full-length production, KA, in 2016. He played a part in the visual documentation of the process. I’ve always enjoyed his artistic choices in framing images, capturing the true essence of moments. Thank you for putting things into perspective, and thank you for being you!

Will you come with me
and take my hand,
To another place
in wonderland.

Fill me up with love,
Take away this emptiness.
Fly me up above,
Shower me with your kindness.
