Raka Maitra
Dancer/Choreographer
While Raka Maitra’s dance practice is based on traditional Odissi, she and her company Chowk continually produce dance theatre that is contemporary, boundary-pushing, and global in outlook. Yet, her process is organic and honest. It is a pleasure working with her and she gives me enough challenges to keep things interesting.
“Stray birds of summer come to my window to sing and fly away.
And yellow leaves of autumn, which have no songs, flutter and fall there with a sigh.”
— Rabindranath Tagore, Stray Birds, translated by the author, 1916
