Bernice Lee

Artist and Dance Practitioner

I have crossed paths with Bernice Lee both at Frontier Danceland and Maya Dance Theatre. I have also encountered her in her independent projects. She has an inquisitive mind and keeps learning and finding out new things. She also has a cheerful disposition. Here is her improvisation at one of my shooting parties.

Hello, I am Bernice. I am an artist, young mother, and dance practitioner. This is me as MAMAMILKMACHINE™.

As a performer, I get all kinds of different photos taken and shared publicly of me. So, I began going around with my smartphone camera, in 2018, in a process of unfixing how the seer and the seen might relate. I was wrestling with what the female gaze might be. Eventually, I moved about less and turned the lens on myself. I started self-portraiture around February 2020, and not long after, discovered I was pregnant. I had already been thinking about motherhood, and was reading Sheila Heti’s book Motherhood, in which she talks about being “not not a mother.” So, as “not not a mother,” I became this.

I continue to make art and live life, playing and performing, as one does. Now with smartphone, child, child’s desires, and team of caregivers.
