Amin Farid (Soultari)

Malay Dance Practitioner/Researcher

I met Amin Farid (Soultari) when working on a project on our Singaporean dance pioneers. He is trained in Malay dance and has done academic research on it. In our session, we started with simple portraits and managed to get some decent ones. Then, I encouraged Amin to dance in a way that was truly him and makes him happy. This was a revelation for me; the photos are exquisitely beautiful. Thank you, Amin, for sharing this authentic self with me.

I run and hide away from all that scares me

Only to realize I have masked myself in return.

When I dance, I feel liberated.

I am freed from the shackles of all things that have rendered me senseless. I am happy, this is what matters most.

My time with Ngiap Heng in the studio was memorable. He made me feel very comfortable, and little did I know he was slowly peeling away the many layers that have hidden my authentic self. I am glad he captured my best attributes, my articulate limbs, frozen yet moving in spirit.

Thank you, Ngiap Heng.
