Bright Ong

Theatre Practitioner/Puppetry Creative

Tall, dark, and somehow Bright . . . leading-man material looking for the photographer in the dark studio. Bright Ong is a ball of energy and fully engages not only in puppetry but also acting and directing. He brings his trademark enthusiasm and big heart to his every exploration of new methods of presentation and engaging audiences. Bright is a quintessential performance-maker, though currently engaged on the West End in London, is still giving it his all for the Singapore arts scene.

The shooting party was a first for me, having only done headshots before, and also being interrogated by a photographer who knows my world. I find it funny how I seem to connect so well to friends who are older—maybe I was born a decade too late! It’s probably a combination of our very distinct personalities, but also a shared love for exploring and trying new things that sets up this friendship. You’re a good reminder for me to never sit too long on any one thing, and to keep experimenting with things out there.

It’s really cool that we have one of our own looking at us through a different lens, quite literally! We get so much pressure on the daily with our work, especially with the way that our economies of scale run. “Instant theatre,” as I like to call it, is something that we are all victim of. There’s hardly room to breathe.

And that’s why the portraits mean that much more to me. To be able to see a snapshot of everyone on their journeys, just for that split second, and take a good look at who we are, what we’ve become. Thanks, Ngiap Heng, for letting that moment breathe forever.
