Crispian Chan
Actor/Photographer
Apparently, I took Crispian Chan’s first portraits in Singapore (he was born in Perth), and I have been taking them ever since. He studied acting at LASALLE, but always has had an interest in photography. He is now a sought-after photographer for theatre productions and profile portraits, and has even started exploring his own version of dance photography. In our session, we discussed what it takes to get an authentic portrait.
Standing in front of the camera now, I feel more comfortable than ever. Chatting with Ngiap Heng during this session, I realised he’d been there for several key moments in my career. He was the one who did my first-ever professional shots for a TV gig in Singapore 18 years back. That was for 9 Lives on Arts Central in 2005, a show Tan Kheng Hua put together. Working on that show with veteran actors such as Pam Oei, Lim Yu-Beng, and Sani Hussin it opened the door for me into the theatre industry. Back then, I’d only been in Singapore for six months and was pretty jittery, not knowing a soul that day. Those first photos capture that mix of excitement and the whole adjusting to a new home. Looking at the latest pictures Ngiap Heng has snapped, it’s like seeing the journey from those early days to where I am now.
