I first knew about Ngiap Heng when I was still a student at LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, more than two decades ago. He probably doesn’t know this, but it was him who indirectly triggered my interest in photography and media, especially when it came to my own practice in dance. Our friendship began to build ever since he offered to take publicity photos for the then newly established T.H.E in 2008. It was during the shoot for Old Sounds (2008) that our conversation started—exchanges about how movements can be best captured, which led to us helping each other in projects and sharing artistic, as well as general, perspectives of life. Coincidentally, we became fathers at the same time, which gave us even more things to talk about.

I am glad that Heng hosted shooting parties and invited artists. Heng always makes sure he captures the essence of a person to the best of his abilities. Photo sessions with him feel like you can fully be yourself, and where lots of chatting happens. And before you know it, hours have passed. These shoots may feel casual, but he will also try creative stuff without hesitation.
